Depression and Suicidality

Staring into hopelessness as you sink deeper.

Sometimes, you find yourself in a well. You look around, notice that it’s dark, and that you’re alone.

You see a rope, but it’s just out of reach. And no one is around to help you out.

You experience a sinking feeling that you are stuck here and can never get out.

The depth of despair and hopelessness scares you as you feel yourself sinking deeper into the well.

You’re paralyzed and in a void.

The void is dark and almost otherworldly. It’s like you’re in a completely different dimension.

You don’t exactly feel sad, you don’t exactly feel angry, and you don’t feel joy. You’re not sure you feel much of anything at all.

You are numb to feeling in a way that is eerie and disturbing to you. You don’t know how you got here, and you don’t know how to get out or if you ever will.

The numb feeling seems to engulf you and hold you firmly in its grasp. You are at the mercy of this numbness and paralyzed.

Fear is a constant companion.

Most days, you live in fear of getting stuck back in the well or the void.

The feeling of depression is unbearable. Nothing could be worse.

When you’re not in the well or the void, you live in fear of going there. When you are there, you are trapped.

No matter what you do, you’re miserable. Sometimes you wonder if things would be better if you weren’t here at all.

Life seems meaningless.

Being unhappy or afraid most of the time causes you to think that you’re a burden to your friends and family.

You conclude that your presence in the world is meaningless and even harmful to others.

You’re not sure what you’re doing here or why, and you feel confident that the world would be better off without you.

Your thoughts keep getting darker and darker. They are merciless.

“You are going nowhere and are weak and worthless, just like most humans. Life is nothing but suffering and meaningless for people like you. Coming back from this is impossible, so trying serves no purpose. It’s your destiny.”

Therapy helps challenge the greatest lie of all time.

“There is nothing I can do about my depression that will help me feel better. I’ve tried everything, and here I am, again.”

Did you catch the alternative fact? Think about it. Has anyone ever tried everything? Everything? No, trying everything is impossible.

Our lives are too short to read a small fraction of the books available for us to read or visit every single place on earth. We can never try thousands of different jobs, such as manual labor, continually learning new skills, or shepherding in the serene hills of a rural area.

Here’s the point. You have never tried everything there is to try to prove that you are beyond improvement. That, my dear reader, is one lie that ends lives.

Time to end depression’s deception.

A depressed mind will trick you into believing alternative facts about yourself and the world around you. Such behavior is called emotional reasoning, and it is a distorted view of reality.

Using cognitive and behavioral strategies, somatic techniques, mindfulness practice, and a holistic existential approach, we will help you reach the rope so you can climb out of the well.

The fight will be real, and it won’t be comfortable. We will examine uncomfortable truths with reason and insight.

Compassion will be our lens and action, our primary tool. Within the context of a warm and empathic relationship, you will learn coping mechanisms and skills to challenge the darkest of thoughts.

There will be slips back down, but you and your therapist are in this together. We are not cutting the rope until you are out of there.

Let’s end depression and those harmful thoughts.

We are looking forward to helping you help yourself get out of this hole.

Hope can replace hopelessness, and life can take a positive turn.
